Snow

The winterwonderland that Calgary usually is has finally arrived with much fanfare and with many accidents. The snow has been falling for the better part of the last week and since the city is close to the mountians and warm winds called Chinooks flow down from the hills makes the city warm during the day, and cool at night, the snow has melted a small amount during the day and then freezes itself at night much to the dismay of drivers. I do really love the snow. One of my favorite sounds is the sound of feet steping on newly fallen powder. The powder crunches as the foot slams on the ground, and the snow is compressed, and the sound is made. Snow also provides a surface that reflects light like nobodys business. A few weeks ago I took a walk out in new snow with the moon out in all its glory and there were places along the path that were usually creepy with dark woods and dark branches, but this night there was nothing to fear since the moon was dancing off all the snow that lay on every surface. I also like snow because it provides a surface on which sliding is a most enjoyable experience. Last night on a whim, friend Sharon Langer and I were romping around suburbia in SW Calgary looking for a hill to sled down. We found one that may have sufficed if were were looking for an early departure from this life, so we chose insted a hill that was used for driving (sometimes this type of hill is called a road). This hill was flat with the use of cars and once our small craft called a GT Snowracer was going then the sliding was great. We took turns riding the GT down the hill and I felt kinda like a bobsleder. Granted we were the furthest thing from olympic contenders, we still felt as though we were participating in some sort of tribute to those who were in Turin acutally doing Canada proud. It felt so very good to go flying down that hill on top of the GT enjoying the pleasure of living in a city that provides its residents with ample oppurtunity to frolic and play with intensity in flakes of frozen water for hours at a time. Thats all for now, until next time enjoy the snow.
